American University of Beirut, Maroun Semaan Faulty of Engineering and Architecture
Beirut, Lebanon
Overview
The Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) is a key component within the American University of Beirut (AUB), one of the largest university campuses in Lebanon. This mini-campus consists of eight interconnected buildings, housing essential academic and administrative functions, including classrooms, lecture halls, labs, computer labs, student study spaces, a restaurant, and offices. MSFEA is equipped with advanced systems supported by central utility plants, making it a hub for academic.
Digital Scope
PARA conducted a comprehensive digital readiness assessment to evaluate the existing capabilities of the systems installed at MSFEA and identify gaps. Based on this analysis, PARA has conceptualized an advanced digital twin platform to enhance facility operations and user experience at MSFEA. This platform encompasses portfolio management, asset management, and energy intelligence, aiming to optimize operational efficiency, sustainability, and resource management across the campus. Key features of the digital twin platform include:
- PARA OS is being deployed on AUB’s virtual server environment, integrating seamlessly with existing systems and software through REST API communication, and providing real-time data and insights for improved decision-making.
- Energy Management Information System (EMIS): The platform focuses on optimizing energy usage, developing insightful Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs), predicting and forecasting energy consumption, generating dynamic active targets to simulate MEP system behavior, and implementing Automated System Optimization (ASO) scenarios driven by real-time occupancy data.
- Asset and Resource Management: The platform also facilitates bidirectional communication with the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), providing actionable insights to improve asset management and resource allocation. Following the readiness assessment and concept development, PARA conducted a financial evaluation to estimate the return on investment (ROI) and payback period for the solution. The Deployment Strategy outlines a detailed plan for procurement, installation, system integration, and platform development to ensure successful implementation across MSFEA complex.
